NASSAU, The Bahamas– The Eugene Dupuch Law School will be exploring collaborative prospects with The Bahamas Industrial Tribunal and the Caribbean Agency for Justice Solutions (CAJS) to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) education programs to assist lawyers with equipping themselves to meet the challenges and opportunities presented by the digital frontier.
The announcement was made by Tonya Bastian Galanis, Principal of the Eugene Dupuch Law School, in her address at the opening ceremony in Nassau for the Industrial Tribunal’s 2023/2024 legal year.
Speaking under the theme, “Stepping up to the Digital Frontier of AI,” Principal Bastian Galanis, explained that the initiative aims to equip lawyers with the necessary skills to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by the rapidly evolving digital frontier.
Stepping up to the Digital Frontier of AI
“As we step into the digital frontier of AI, it is imperative that our legal professionals are well-equipped to handle the evolving landscape. A collaboration with The Bahamas Industrial Tribunal and the Caribbean Agency for Justice Solutions is a significant stride towards achieving this goal which will not only enrich the learning experience of students but also contribute to the advancement of the broader objectives of legal institutions throughout the region,” she stated.
In 2021, the Eugene Dupuch Law School and the Caribbean Agency for Justice Solutions formalized a Memorandum of Understanding for Co-Operation to expand the delivery of legal education and support the provision of legal aid services in The Bahamas, to ultimately benefit the wider Caribbean.
The Industrial Tribunal of The Bahamas recently unveiled AI tools developed by the Caribbean Agency for Justice Solutions to support the intelligent automation of administrative functions at the court. Her Honor Indira Demeritte-Francis, President of the Bahamas Industrial Tribunal, commented on the benefits of expanding the collaboration to include the Eugene Dupuch Law School, stating:
“The Tribunal shares the commitment of the Eugene Dupuch Law School and the Caribbean Agency for Justice Solutions to ensure that legal practitioners have the knowledge and tools needed to effectively engage with and leverage Artificial Intelligence in the pursuit of justice.
Responsible use of AI in law
Bevil Wooding, Executive Director of the Caribbean Agency for Justice Solutions (CAJS), added:
“We believe that by fostering initiatives that address the responsible use of AI in law practice, we can enhance the efficiency and accessibility of operations at the Tribunal as well as in other judicial forums.”
“The integration of AI education into legal practice is a critical step in modernizing the legal profession. This collaboration aligns with our mission to promote innovation and excellence in the delivery of justice services. Together with the Eugene Dupuch Law School and the Bahamas Industrial Tribunal, we aim to create technology tools as well training programs that help set a new benchmark for legal education in the digital era.”
The Eugene Dupuch Law School, Bahamas Industrial Tribunal, and the Caribbean Agency for Justice Solutions anticipate that this collaborative effort will serve as a model for institutions across the Caribbean and the wider Commonwealth, fostering advancements in legal education and ensuring the legal profession remains at the forefront of technological progress.
