Georgetown, Grand Cayman – Officials from the Caribbean Agency for Justice Solutions (CAJS) made a courtesy visit to the Chief Justice of the Cayman Islands, Hon. Margaret Ramsay-Hale on Friday 27 October 2023 to discuss the progress of their MOU to modernize the Judiciary of the Cayman Islands.
The meeting provided a significant platform for both parties to review and reinforce the partnership that has developed between the Caribbean Agency for Justice Solutions and the Judiciary of the Cayman Islands over the past several years.
Executive Director of CAJS, Bevil Wooding and Deborah Thurton, Chief Experience Officer, met with the Chief Justice at the Chief Justice Chambers in Georgetown, Grand Cayman. The discussions encompassed several trends and advancements that impact the administration of justice in the Cayman Islands and the wider Caribbean. The leaders considered a range of topics, including cybersecurity, the careful application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to support accessibility to justice and efficiencies within the justice system, strategies modernizing and enhancing access to justice and improving overall court performance.
Bevil Wooding, Executive Director of CAJS, emphasized the importance of these interactions, stating, “Our partnership with the Cayman Islands Judiciary has been marked by significant progress, including the tangible advancement of the quality, efficiency and accessibility of justice services in the Cayman Islands.”
Chief Justice Hon. Margaret Ramsay-Hale expressed her optimism about the collaboration, saying, “The development cooperation agreement with CAJS has proven to be a game-changer for the Cayman Islands Judiciary. As technological innovations continue to reshape the legal field, we welcome the expertise and insights from CAJS to help us navigate these changes effectively. We are well poised to continue reaping the benefits of this partnership with the imminent adoption of Artificial Intelligence enabled tools and an even greater focus on meeting the training and capacity building needs of our stakeholders.”
This collaboration to date has enabled the Cayman Islands Judiciary to successfully upgrade its electronic filing, e-payment and case management processes, thanks to the technology and services implemented by CAJS. In the coming years, the partnership between CAJS and the Cayman Islands Judiciary is expected to yield even more results, as the organizations work together to modernize justice delivery and respond to the ever-changing landscape of the justice system.
